Exporting Video
Exporting produces a video file from a recording. It is how footage leaves eConnect as evidence.
Requesting an export
- Find the footage in playback.
- Mark the section with Set start from playhead and Set end from playhead.
- Choose whether to Include metadata.
- Request the export.
The clip is assembled by the recorder and is not instant. Carry on working and collect it when it is ready — see Export Status and Downloads.
Choosing the period
Include enough either side of the incident to make it interpretable. A clip beginning at the moment of an event and ending immediately after shows what happened but not what led to it, which is the first question anybody reviewing it will ask.
Equally, do not export an hour when ninety seconds will do. Long exports are slow to produce, large to store and tedious to review.
Include metadata
Metadata carries the context: camera, timestamps, and detail identifying what the footage is.
Include it for anything that may be used as evidence. A clip with no embedded indication of where and when it came from is much weaker, and a file name is not a reliable substitute.
The export server
Exports are produced by an export service, which may take a moment to resolve — shown as Resolving export server…. Where a browser cannot reach that service directly, the request is routed through the portal, so exporting works from the web client as well as the desktop one.
Handling exported footage
An exported clip leaves eConnect's permission system entirely. Whoever holds the file can watch all of it, regardless of what they could see in the application.
Treat it as evidence: keep it where your organisation keeps evidence, attach it to a case rather than leaving it in a downloads folder, and be deliberate about who receives it.
Permissions
Exporting has its own permission keys, separate from viewing. A person can be entitled to watch footage without being entitled to take a copy, and that separation is worth preserving. See Permission Groups.
