AI Usage Widget
The AI Usage widget shows one AI usage metric with its trend — a single figure and how it has been moving.
It is an administrator's widget, for keeping an eye on cost and health without opening AI Usage and Analytics every day.
Configuring it
Choose the metric. One widget shows one metric, so a dashboard watching AI usage is usually three or four of these side by side.
| Metric | Watch it for |
|---|---|
| Tokens (in + out) | Consumption against your allowance — the cost figure |
| Active Users | Whether adoption is spreading or concentrated |
| Turns | How much the assistant is actually being asked |
| Avg First Token | The delay users experience |
| Queue Waits / Timeouts | Capacity running short |
| Stops | Answers users cancelled — slow or unhelpful responses |
A useful set
Four widgets that between them tell you most of what matters:
- Tokens — are we within budget?
- Active Users — is it being used, and by how many?
- Avg First Token — is it fast enough to be worth using?
- Queue Waits — is capacity holding?
Tokens rising with Active Users is healthy adoption. Tokens rising without them is longer conversations, and worth understanding before it becomes a bill.
Reading the trend
The trend matters more than the figure. A token count means little in isolation; a token count that has doubled in a fortnight is actionable.
Queue waits appearing where there were none is the earliest sign of a capacity problem, usually before anyone complains.
Acting on what it shows
The widget shows; the settings are elsewhere:
| Signal | Where to act |
|---|---|
| Consumption near the allowance | AI Configuration — allowances and per-user limits |
| Queue waits climbing | Provider capacity and concurrent streams |
| Individual tool failures | AI Usage and Analytics |
Who should see it
Put these on an administrator's dashboard rather than an operational one. Usage figures are management information, not something a floor operator acts on, and space on an operational dashboard is better spent on data.
Requirements
Needs the AI Usage view permission, or provider management. Users without either do not see the widget in the list.
