Sessions and History

Each conversation with the assistant is a session. They persist, so you can return to what you established yesterday instead of asking again.

Starting and returning

ControlWhat it does
New chatBegin a fresh conversation with no history
Chat historyReopen an earlier conversation

Start a new chat when you move to a genuinely different subject. Earlier turns are re-sent as context on every question, so a thread carrying an unrelated morning's work makes afternoon questions slower, more expensive, and often less accurate for the noise.

Stay in one thread while you are following a single line of enquiry — that context is exactly what makes follow-ups short.

Naming a conversation

The assistant titles sessions itself, and you can ask it to rename one. A useful title matters more than it sounds: chat history is a list, and "Voids on register 4, Friday night" is findable in a fortnight where "New chat" is not.

Detaching into its own window

Open in a separate window moves the assistant out of the main window.

Do this if you use two monitors. When attached, the assistant shares the right-hand edge with the Workspace and only one can be open at a time. Detached, it takes no layout space in the main window, so you can have the assistant, the Workspace and your grid all visible.

The detached window shares your session and closes when you sign out, like any pop-out.

Provider selection

Where more than one provider is configured, a conversation stays on the provider it started with rather than following a later global change. That keeps a long thread consistent — answers do not change character halfway through because a default moved.

Most people never need to think about this. Administrators configure what is available under AI Configuration.

Deleting a conversation

Sessions can be deleted when you no longer need them. Deleting removes the conversation; it does not remove anything the conversation produced — a chart you pinned to a dashboard stays, and a report you generated or emailed is unaffected.

Deletion does not remove the audit record that the session existed.

What is recorded

Creating, renaming and deleting a session, and the messages within it, are all audited, as are emails sent on your behalf and feedback you give on an answer.

The practical implication: assistant conversations are part of the record of your work, the same as queries and searches are. See Reading the Audit Trail.

Feedback

Where you can mark an answer as good or poor, doing so is worth the second it takes. Administrators see the aggregate under AI Usage and Analytics, which is how a systematically bad answer gets noticed and fixed rather than worked around.
