Muting Alerts

Muting suppresses the interruption without turning alerts off. Alerts still arrive and are still recorded; they just stop demanding your attention.

Muting for a period

Choose a mute duration from the alert controls. While muted, popups, sounds and Auto-Follow are suppressed, and the title bar shows that alerts are muted along with the time remaining.

Timed mute is the right choice for a known interruption — a briefing, a walkthrough, a period when something noisy is happening that you already know about. It ends by itself, which is its main advantage over turning features off.

Muting indefinitely

Alerts can also be muted with no end time, which stays in force until you unmute.

Use this sparingly. An indefinite mute is easy to set and easy to forget, and the alerts you are not being shown are exactly the ones somebody expects you to be watching. Prefer a timed mute wherever the interruption has a foreseeable end.

Unmuting

Unmute from the same control. Alerts raised while muted are in the tray waiting — muting suppresses the interruption, not the alert.

Muting is visible and recorded

The title bar shows mute status and remaining time while it is in force, so a supervisor walking past can see it, and every mute and unmute is audited with its duration.

This is deliberate. Muting is a legitimate operational decision, and the record exists so it can be seen as one — a period with no acknowledgements is explained by a mute in the log rather than looking like inattention.

What muting does not do

  • It does not stop alerts being raised — rules keep firing
  • It does not stop alerts being recorded
  • It does not affect other users — mute is yours alone
  • It does not stop email or SMS delivery, which is set on your profile

Quieter alternatives to muting

If you are muting often, the underlying problem is usually configuration rather than volume:

  • Turn popups off but leave the tray on, so alerts collect quietly — see Alert Preferences
  • Turn sound off and keep the visual notice
  • Review the tags that are generating alerts; a tag applied too broadly produces alerts nobody acts on, which trains people to ignore all of them

Persistent muting is a signal worth passing to whoever configures your tags and rules.
